All they care is that the thing they want you to fear is something that they, not you, get to dictate the 'facts' on. Something whose nature is such that you can't confirm any of it by direction observation. One should be attentive to that pattern.

In other words, they force people thinking "Im not a scientist, I must rely on what they tell me." So renouncing our own intellect and judjement, rending people like an infant, renouncing the control over our own body.
