What I've learned so far, or think I know:

Downdraft gasifier is probably the best choice for the home workshop

If you plan on building a budget gasifier out of salvage materials, don't get married to any single diagram or plan, understand the basics and fundamentals of gasification first- then make the best out of your available materials

Use a dedicated air intake, do not use your fuel stack as the air inlet

No air leaks- unit can explode if oxygen enters the reactor

Try to force the tar-containing gases to a high heat zone to crack the tars into usable gas. Heat = good

Not sure about this concept, but I agree with the comment that recommends using a glass bottle for the petrol.
