A bit off topic but not really... from a side bar on Twitter: I was talking to a Safeway employee in the Seattle Market who explained to me: grocers (not just Safeway but in the aggregate) are losing 300-400 million a year due to 'stuff walking out the door'. There are plans in place to deal with this. (this is part of the logistics supply chain/ resource shrinkage problem in a scarcity crisis)

Essentially all retail chains in America today are using 1/ real time face ID 2/ any other signal they can get their hands on + 3/ AI to identify threats in real time, and signal PLAIN CLOTHES security officers (not 'normal employees') to implement whatever policy to deal with the problem. There is too much money involved and their other option is just shut down operations. This is all true since 'post COVID era' and we are there now. AI = 'Social Credit in real time'. Period. Pro-Tip. Buy a 'pet' RFID chip reader now, while you still can. I'll bet the protocols on those devices will help a...

Real time face ID uses a variant of the DVR called an 'NVR' (network video recorder) -- or possibly a VNVR (virtual NVR running on a 'PC' or similar IoT sort of thing in the store). Those search terms are good to watch for, in the coming supply chain / logistics crises. Believe me - that data is being mined for 'local repeat offenders' as well general 'AI training curated corpus of training data'. I'll bet China is doing the same thing, for different/similar reasons. Not sure about Europe but... I'll bet yes.

tl;dr - we are ALREADY on a par with China, if a bit laggy.

Just as, 'everything about oil or carbon trading is really about resource depletion'... well... 'everything about AI is really about managing that crisis using more data about the problem -- people, esp. useless feeders' 'They' don't need training data... they need YOUR biometrics. I wonder why.

btw, the 300-400 million USD figure above was for the Seattle Market, not the whole US. That must be well up in the billions if not 100s of billions

This is not *entirely* true. They are filming them, for future reference.

Here's how the MacDonald's drive through works these days -- you pull up to the 'order' board, and if you have a sail phone [with the 'app' of course], they already know who you are. The view you see is personalised for you (try to sell you whatever). Now you pull up to another window, and you should have some sort of PIN to pay with. Makes paying easy. They made you, so you get a PIN. Your payment is in the bag at this point and doesn't cause you any bother.

All other drive throughs are trying to imitate this now.

But it's all really about controlling the supply chain, training you, and screening potential buyers with AI.

It doesn't take much imagination to know what he retail 'grocery store chains' (Kroger, Safeway, Albertsons, Jewel/Osco, whatever they call themselves now)

You like buying food? Good luck, White Man. What if 'woke' means you don't eat? See how that worked?

A few days ago, Wodwo poasted a article about how Amazion 'cashierless' stores are flopping

Shoppers in the Amazion-run stores grab what they want and leave, without the hassle of haveing to go thru checkout

They werent using AI tho, but 'remote cashiers' in India, whose job it was to track every customer using cameras.

They are shutting it down bcuz customers are complaining that its takeing too long to get their bill

Yes. A lot of stores like that are turning out to have used subcon data centres to monitor people, rather than 'AI tech' as described. I'm sure a lot of Indians will be out of a job if ChatGPT *really* works for that sort of thing. (Hint: right now it doesn't quite).

The point is, stores will do whatever minimises the cost and that isn't good news if you want to buy actual nutritious food.

And in Canada self check outs and retail theft are destroying the market. Self checkouts literally have employees both retail and security to control theft but in Canada security guards outside of bank transfers cannot carry and cannot physically stop a theft. Heck, usage of ai in public shopping areas are considered unc9nstiutional in Canada.

Moastly left leaning areas have been allowing retail theft through the courts for at least a decade.
