Revolutionary Communist Party (Bob Avakian) on Israel and Jews

Why Support for Israel Is NOT Inconsistent with Anti-Semitism

November 26, 2018 | Revolution Newspaper | revcom.us

From a Revolution Club member:
I thought the article about “The Pittsburgh Synagogue Massacre, Donald Trump, and the Rise of Anti-Semitism“ was really good, and important. In response to the argument that Trump can’t be anti-Semitic because he’s such a supporter of Israel, the article correctly points out that “this support has nothing to do with concern for Jewish people (much less Muslims!). No, it is grounded in the role Israel plays in the world for the U.S., in particular as a bastion for its domination of the Middle East as well as the Christian fanaticism of a section of Christian evangelicals—the Christian fascists of whom Mike Pence is a key leader.” And that this Christian fascist support for Israel is rooted in anti-Semitism. But I think there’s more to say on the relation between Israel and anti-Semitism, and why support for Israel is not at all inconsistent with anti-Semitism.
Historically, the Zionist movement in Europe arose as a response to anti-Semitism. But unlike the communists (of Jewish and non-Jewish descent) who fought to defeat anti-Semitism as part of the fight to abolish all forms of oppression and exploitation, and others who fought it out of their commitment to justice and equality, the Zionists basically accepted the permanence of anti-Semitism, capitulating to it in that sense—“I recognized the emptiness and futility of trying to ‘combat’ anti-semitism,” Zionism founder Theodor Herzl wrote—and sought an escape. This, of course, aligned with the anti-Semitic sentiments of many who wanted the Jews out anyway... not unlike the many racists (Abraham Lincoln included) who supported “back to Africa” schemes for solving America’s “race problem.” Remember, before devising his “Final Solution,” Hitler initially planned to deport the Jews rather than exterminate them.
And for the Zionists, Hitler’s rise to power was seen as a confirmation of their view that Jewish integration into European society was hopeless. Rather than condemning and combating Nazism, many Zionist leaders saw it as an opportunity—a “fertile force,” as David Ben-Gurion put it—to encourage Jewish emigration to Palestine. While Jewish organizations in the U.S. and throughout the world were organizing boycotts of Hitler’s Germany, the Zionist settler-colonial forces in Palestine continued diplomatic and economic relations with Germany through the pre-war years. From 1933-1939, the Nazis and German Zionist leaders had a mutually beneficial “transfer agreement” to get Jews (particularly wealthy Jews and Zionists) out of Germany and into Palestine. During WW2, one Zionist paramilitary group, the “Stern Gang,” even offered to fight for the Nazis in exchange for the transfer of Jews from Nazi-occupied Europe to Palestine. In 1938, after the Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) pogrom throughout Germany, when England was compelled to let in a few thousand Jewish refugees, David Ben-Gurion made the following statement:

If I knew that it was possible to save all the children of Germany by transporting them to England, and only half by transferring them to the Land of Israel, I would choose the latter, for before us lies not only the numbers of these children but the historical reckoning of the people of Israel.
Such was the concern of Israel’s “founding father” for the lives of the Jewish people as a whole.
The Zionists built their colonial project on two big lies: 1) that God promised the land to the Jews, and 2) that this was a “land without people for a people without land.” Their land-obsessed nationalism mimicked the “blood and soil” logic of their anti-Semitic persecutors.
The State of Israel was founded on the ashes of the terroristic destruction of hundreds of Palestinian villages and ethnic cleansing of almost a million Palestinians from the territory, which could not have happened without the crucial role played by Zionist paramilitary forces, some of whom literally modeled themselves on Italian fascists. Here’s how Israeli historian Tom Segev describes the horrible irony of 100,000 Jews, mostly Holocaust survivors, taking over Palestinian homes:

Free people—Arabs—had gone into exile and become destitute refugees; destitute refugees—Jews—took the exiles’ places as a first step in their new lives as free people. One group lost all they had, while the other found everything they needed—tables, chairs, closets, pots, pans, plates, sometimes clothes, family albums, books, radios, and pets. Most of the immigrants broke into the abandoned Arab houses without direction, without order, without permission. For several months the country was caught up in a frenzy of take-what-you-can, first-come, first served.
Israel, which has been a Nakba (a catastrophe) for the Palestinian people since day 1, and an unrelenting nightmare ever since—all while pretending to be an enlightened democracy for all—is now resolving the inherent contradiction in a “democratic Jewish state” by throwing off the democratic façade (which was always very thin) and implementing open Jewish fascism. With the same logic of the Charlottesville Nazi chant, “the Jews will not replace us,” flipped and applied to Arabs, Israel’s new law declaring itself officially a “nation-state of the Jewish people” formalizes Jewish supremacy. Gaza turned into a giant concentration camp... repeated mass slaughters of Palestinians and the specter of mass “transfer” or even “final solutions”... the victims of Nazis, acting like Nazis. What a moral disaster!
And how did Israel’s leaders respond to the mass murder of 11 Jews in the Pittsburgh synagogue? Activists in Prime Minister Netanyahu’s Likud party circulated an email upholding the shooter’s rationale, blaming the synagogue for its involvement with the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, which the email said “encouraged immigration” and “acted against Trump,” thereby “encouraging anti-Semitism.” The main emissary from Israel that went to Pittsburgh after the shooting, Naftali Bennett, is a pro-Trump fascist notorious for whipping up a pogromist atmosphere against African migrants in Israel, who he calls “infiltrators” and accuses of spreading crime and rape (sound familiar?). The increasingly theocratic State of Israel’s “Chief Rabbi” refused to call the Tree of Life synagogue a “synagogue,” because it’s not the “Orthodox” branch of Judaism. Israel is proudly linked to fascist forces internationally—not only in the U.S. and now Brazil, but also more direct Nazi descendants in Hungary and Poland, for example—joining their chorus of anti-Semitic attacks on George Soros. For the Zionists, things have truly come full circle.
As Bob Avakian has pointed out, there have been two responses to the Holocaust—two meanings to the idea “never again.” One response is, never again should something like this happen to anyone. The other response is, never again should this happen to us, and on that basis anything we do to others is justified. Where the latter one leads is on full display in the State of Israel.

Modern-day 'Israel' is objectionable for a few reasons, but not becuz all blood-and-soil nationalism is 'bad'

Unlike Germoney, 'Israel' is a colonial enterprise by European jews to inject their hybrid blood onto soil that hasnt belonged to "them" for two millennia

Theres a point where a people lose their racial claim over a piece of land. 2000 years is definitely past the expiration date

Arguably, it never belonged to them at all; the Jews that stayed behind became the modern-day Palestinians after conversions to Christianity and Islam (that is why there are even Christian Palestinians in the first place: They were among the original followers of Jesus), and one can quite possibly make the case that Ashkenazi and other assorted Mizrahi Jews forfeited the territory when they left it behind--One cannot even say that Jews were forced out, since the Jews that stayed behind (to reiterate) became the latter-day Palestinian Christian community.

A lot of people argue that the Roman Empire forced out Jews on the basis of religion. Also most anti-Zionists don't argue that there should be no Jews in Palestine, just that Israel shouldn't exist as a Jewish state. If Jews just built traditionalist communities it would be different than attempting to set up a secular Jewish state and expel non-Jews. Much like Amish people build traditionalist communities in America. As stated in this thread, Jews and Arabs have coexisted for years until the state of Israel and colonialism got involved.

Defending Bob Avakian as a full grown adult in 2023 is retarded, man.

Bob Avakian is a "RICH BOY" himself. He's a spoiled Armenian kid who got in on the Leftist grift. There is absolutely nothing reasonable or "good" about his positions.

Please go back to defending his opposite in the Jewish Defense League. They at least are consistent.

Communist scum change their position with the prevailing wind. They have absolutely zero moral core.

First they will play the Anti-Zionist, Anti-blah blah "insert bad thing" game.

But the minute the factions that supported them become too strong, you go right back to the old ethnic tribalism again.

So, No, I do not support Bob Avakian or any retarded "equalitarian" schemes.

The Jews took the Land. It is now theirs. Unless you want to fight a real war of extermination to drive them out, it is and should be THEIR STATE.

I favor a Jewish state for Jews.
I do think the Arab Christian, Druze and other minorities should be respected, but Israel belongs to Israelis just as England belongs to the English, and the Palestinian question should be resolved by a repatriation to Jordan.

This is the only consistent position, and I don't care if this pisses off certain segments of the Far-Right who think that Jewish duplicity and methods somehow negates this principled position or if it pisses off the Centrists and the Progressives, or the Leftist Cultural Norm at large. I just don't care. This is a consistent position.

So Avakian isn't really staying true to class struggle based, Besoshvilli/Berianidze style Marxism. He basically supports a society where everyone is Democratically involved in social justice, but he doesn't talk much about old school class struggle. Old School class struggle, though, is precisely what we need.

Back in the day, Besoshvilli recommended I be active with progressive labor party instead of the revolutionary communist party.

But this is a sweet video.

Behind the Israel-Gaza Clash:

“Indiscriminate Violence and Terrorism”—PERPETRATED BY ISRAEL AND ITS BACKER, U.S. CAPITALISM-IMPERIALISM

October 9, 2023

On the morning of October 7, armed forces of the Hamas organization, the Islamic fundamentalists who govern the Palestinian region of Gaza, launched a surprise, multi-pronged land, missile, and hang-glider attack against Israel.1 There are reports that between two and three thousand missiles were launched from Gaza at Israel, some breaching Israel’s “iron dome” anti-missile systems. Hamas says it captured Israeli troops, and news reports show destroyed or captured Israeli military vehicles. And as we post this, there are reports that after more than 24 hours, fighting continues inside Israel near the border with Gaza, and that the Hamas forces are holding Israeli hostages, military and non-military.
The way this action is being spun in the ruling class media of U.S. capitalism-imperialism starts in the middle of the story. It whites out the history of violent, terrorist ethnic cleansing by Zionist settlers that brought about the state of Israel. It whites out 75 years of ongoing and escalating Apartheid-style discrimination,2 dehumanization, terror, and genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza, and throughout what is now Israel and the Palestinian territories it occupies illegally. Living under a brutal Israeli blockade, 45 percent of the population of Gaza is unemployed and 80 percent depend on international food aid to avoid starvation, according to Palestinian and U.N. data.
Israel has the most powerful missile defense system in the world, and a military with state-of-the-art death machinery including a substantial nuclear arsenal, enabled or provided by the U.S. The people in Gaza are basically defenseless against air strikes and missile attacks.
Tweet URL
Immediately after the attack began, Israel destroyed a major office and residential building in Gaza. As we post this piece, Israeli officials are saying several hundred people were killed (how many were military and how many were civilians is not clear). Palestinian officials are reporting hundreds of Palestinians killed. And while news coverage in the U.S. focuses only on the suffering in Israel, all of Gaza is under siege, preparing for worse, and people there are living in imminent danger of much more deadly attacks.
Cedric Leighton, a former U.S. military commander, told CNN that while Israel’s military and political objectives in bombing Gaza were unclear, possibly even to Israel’s rulers at this point, the immediate response of the bombing of Gaza is “frankly for retribution.” In other words, indiscriminate mass murder of civilians as collective punishment. All indications are that Israel is preparing for much worse in the hours and days to come.3
There is complexity to the current conflict, not all of which we can address here and now. There is also a basic right and wrong. Israel’s oppression of and attacks on the Palestinian people are egregious crimes against humanity. And that is true no matter “who shot first” in this particular clash, or the nature of forces that attacked Israel. People everywhere need to demand no Israeli massacre in Gaza. And, be challenged to confront and oppose the fundamental nature of Zionism, a racist ideology in service of U.S. capitalism-imperialism.4

“Indiscriminate Violence and Terrorism”—PERPETRATED BY ISRAEL AND ITS BACKER, U.S. CAPITALISM-IMPERIALISM

revcom.us
In response to the attack from Gaza, U.S. Secretary of “Defense” Lloyd Austin denounced the Palestinian forces for attacks on civilians with “indiscriminate violence and terrorism.” “Indiscriminate Violence and Terrorism,” in four words, only scratches the surface of the history and present-day actions of the state of Israel towards the Palestinian people.
The State of Israel is literally built on, and exists on the basis of, indiscriminate violence and terrorism against the Palestinian people. Including these nodal points:
  • In 1948, during the Nakba (Arabic for catastrophe), almost a million Palestinians were forced from their land, villages and homes by terror, rape, and mass murder.5 To ensure that there would be nothing for the Palestinians to return to, their villages and even many olive and orange trees were thoroughly destroyed. This barbaric slaughter, and the ongoing terrorization and murder of Palestinian people, was justified by the racist ideology of Zionism that dehumanizes the Palestinian people.
  • From December 27, 2008 to January 19, 2009, Israel, backed by the U.S., attacked the Palestinian people in Gaza with U.S.-supplied F-16 bombers, Apache helicopters, massive and indiscriminate missile attacks, tanks, and an invasion by thousands of troops. The number of Palestinians killed during the 24-day assault, is estimated to be between 1,166 and 1,417, including 844 non-combatants, 281 of them children. Israeli officials express outrage that in the current outbreak, Hamas forces killed non-combatant civilians. And Israel claims that in their violent oppression of people in Gaza, they avoid civilian casualties. That’s an obscene lie. Emblematic of the depravity of Israel’s 2008-2009 assault on Gaza, 42 Palestinians were killed and another 55 wounded in a single Israeli attack on a United Nations school that was sheltering Palestinians who had been forced to flee their homes. Doctors said all of the victims were civilians, not connected with Hamas military forces, and that many of the victims were children.6
  • In 2014, Israel carried out massive attacks on Gaza for 50 straight days in July and August. In this extended slaughter, Israel killed 2,251 Palestinians—1,462 of whom were civilians, including 551 children. The death toll on the Israeli side was 67 soldiers (who were invading Gaza) and six civilians. More than 100,000 Palestinians in Gaza were left without a home they could return to.7 A year later, not a single home had been rebuilt. Ever since, Israel (backed by the U.S.) has enforced blockades that prevent humanitarian aid from rebuilding from this massacre.
These crimes are but punctuation points in an endless reign of terror by the official Israeli military against the people, overwhelmingly civilians, in Gaza. And this “indiscriminate violence and terrorism” is escalating in sync with increasingly genocidal terror by KKK-style, rabidly Zionist, heavily armed “settlers” against Palestinians in the West Bank region of Palestine, illegally occupied by Israel.

An Explosive Situation, and the Interests of Humanity

On the morning of the outbreak of fighting, Biden announced, “The United States unequivocally condemns this appalling assault against Israel by Hamas terrorists from Gaza, and I made clear to [Israel’s] Prime Minister Netanyahu that we stand ready to offer all appropriate means of support to the Government and people of Israel. Terrorism is never justified. Israel has a right to defend itself and its people. The United States warns against any other party hostile to Israel seeking advantage in this situation. My Administration’s support for Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering.”
Note three points here.
One: U.S. military and other backing for Israel is “rock solid.” Meaning, Israel is an essential and invaluable enforcer (regional and global thug) for the interests of the U.S. empire. And, with its persecution of the Palestinian people, Israel is a bitter example of a model of what the rulers of the U.S. call the “free world.” From Gaza to Bangladesh, from Guatemala to the Peoples Republic of Congo, that “free world” is a world of slums and sweatshops, environmental devastation and war, and every kind of oppression.
Two: Yet again, the endless hypocrisy of the world’s most horrific perpetrators and enablers of terror (see the American Crime series at revcom.us and A FINAL NOTE: On the Real Nature and Monstrous Crimes of This Country at the end of THE TRIALS OF FASCIST DONALD TRUMP, AND THE CRIMINAL NATURE OF THIS WHOLE SYSTEM… by Bob Avakian).
And three, note the threat to “any other party hostile to Israel seeking advantage in this situation.” That threat comes in the context of ferocious, escalating, and extremely dangerous confrontations between U.S. capitalism-imperialism, and Russia and China, its global capitalist-imperialist rivals. For background, including how this conflict is taking place in the context of and interpenetrating with the fierce clash between traditional imperialist and fascist sections of the U.S. ruling class, and what that has to do with the need and basis for revolution, see THE TRIALS OF FASCIST DONALD TRUMP, AND THE CRIMINAL NATURE OF THIS WHOLE SYSTEM... by Bob Avakian.
Russia and China are “seeking advantage in” conflicts in the Middle East, moving to extend their influence and contend with U.S. domination through economic, diplomatic, and military initiatives and alliances. If the current conflict expands, it could draw in more direct involvement of the U.S., Russia, and China and escalate in dangerous ways into regional war, or even be the spark that could lead to a world war, with the existential threat that would pose to the survival of human society.
The October 7 attack on Israel involves forces that do not represent a way out of, and in fact reinforce oppression. But as we emphasized, there is a basic right and wrong here: Israel’s oppression of the Palestinian people is an egregious crime against humanity. And people must not stand aside while Israel threatens and prepares yet another massacre against the people of Gaza.
Bob Avakian on the Existential Crisis Facing Israel
But even beyond that, imagine. Imagine the impact of an actual revolution in the “belly of the beast,” the world’s most massive perpetrator and enabler of reactionary violence and terror, the United States. Imagine the impact that would have on the people of the Middle East, and the whole world, not just ending the crimes of this system but setting whole new terms, and a whole new standard for what humanity can aspire to.
That is not just a dream. This historic moment, with all its horrors, is also a time when revolution in this monster is more possible. The revcoms have the leadership, the strategy, and the vision to make that happen. Everyone outraged by the state of the planet, including how it is bringing such misery and death to the Palestinian people, has a responsibility to get with that revolution. Now.

Black Africans were deprived of the most basic rights including the right to vote. Human rights organizations including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and B’Tselem have made carefully documented and damning cases that Israel’s treatment of the Palestinian people “is Apartheid.” [back]
3. Since 2007, Gaza has been ruled by Hamas, a reactionary Islamic fundamentalist movement. Hamas has called its action the start of an “Al Aqsa Typhoon,” framing it in clashes at the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem between Muslims, and reactionary Jewish fascist fundamentalists who have carried out repeated provocations there, backed by the Israeli military. Framing the oppression of the Palestinian people by Zionism as a holy war between Muslim fundamentalist theocracy and Jewish fascist Zionism serves the interests of both sides in a clash defined by those terms. The actual interests of the majority of the people in what today is Israel and Israeli-occupied territories, are represented by a secular state that moves to overcome the legacy of Zionism and all forms of exploitation and oppression. He may be a pampered scion of affluence, but he remains incontrovertibly a rapscallion of the lower classes.

The accumulation of riches may alter one's socioeconomic standing, but it leaves unexpunged one's class provenance, which remains indelibly inscribed in the blood that courses through one's veins.

Most rich people nowadays are lower-class trash. Ergo, despite the epithet of 'spoiled rich kid' he may bear, his left-wing political predilections are consonant with his lower-class nature, the immutable stricture thereof being irrevocably circumscribed by bloodline, not accumulated riches.

The Jews, too, are, likewise, a slave race; hence, it stands to reason that numerous initial adherents of the Communist doctrine were Jews of opulent means.

No amount of money can efface the inherent slave nature ingrained in one predestined to a condition of bondage, in fact the more money you give him the more he is enslaved; which is why the Jews are both the wealthiest, and the most servile, of all races. Although some of them have the blood of nobility for the most part they are lower class ghetto trash. Slaves by nature like their Hebraic forebears.

It's not the 1900s. The "working class" has no interest as a group in the present context.

You are still stuck in the Marxist rhetoric, which only made any logical sense in a very NARROW TIME SLOT in history: when Workers were industrial in England mostly.

That was the only time in history that "the workers" ever had a real shot.

We are back to Ancient Roman times.

The slaves cannot unite. Only elites unite.

Get over it.

I've found that Communists tend to have the right position on Jews. Capitalists either go the route of Fox News or they go the route of VNNforum. It's one extreme or the other, while Communists oppose Israel and Zionism while still labeling capitalism as the main problem. The only people who avoid both philosemitism and antisemitism are communists.

Communists are INSANE and incoherent.

My position on Jews: Israel today, Israel tomorrow, Israel forever.

Israel is the indigenous homeland of the Jewish people.
